Breakfast of Champions - September 1st

Good morning Champ.

Beware of Fool’s Wisdom

1 Timothy 4: 7 – 8 (NIV)

Have nothing to do with godless myths and old wives' tales; rather, train yourself to be godly. 8For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come.

I remember once preaching this verse in our Church and as I did, I used some props to make my point. While reading it I walked under a ladder, broke a mirror, spilt salt and did not throw any over my shoulder, as well as a couple of other dangerous acts.  The looks on people faces were priceless. I then opened the Bible and said, “Someone show me one of those old wives tales in here,” and of course I had no takers.

Paul encouraged Timothy to have nothing to do with stupid superstitions and fables but rather to get fit in God’s life-changing Word. This is also good advice for us as we set our desires to live like Champions. When was the last time you walked under a ladder or broke a mirror?  Guess what, nothing happens!  But when you take some truth out of God’s Word and dare to apply that to your life anything can happen and it probably will.

So the advice of Paul for us today is don’t waste your time becoming an expert of every old wives tale present in the world, but rather get into God’s Word and become and expert of its contents. As you do, you step into God’s Gym.  His Word truly is the breakfast of champions and it makes us fit for every challenge life may have in store for us and according to this verse, it makes us fit for eternity. Working your body out does some good, but getting fit with God’s Word makes you strong indeed!

Have a great day.
