=LESSONS FROM THE GOLF COURSE=
Yesterday we used a golf analogy (replacement of divots) to learn something
profound about forgiveness. Let's continue with a golf theme and talk about
some more life lessons that I learned from playing golf. I do not claim to
be a good golfer, but I certainly found some great parallels between the
game and life that help me in my daily Christian walk.
Ephesians 6:14-15 (NKJV)
Stand therefore, having girded your waist with truth, having put on the
breastplate of righteousness, 15 and having shod your feet with the
preparation of the gospel of peace;
-A correct stance is vital.-
Before you even attempt to hit a ball in golf you have to make sure you are
standing correctly. If you want to hit straight balls, you have to stand
correctly. This is a great parallel to our Christian walk because if we
want to "hit good shots", we need to make sure our stance is correct. Make
sure you are daily standing in the finished work of Christ, standing tall in
His victory and completeness. Also always remember that you are standing in
the reality that you are now a new creation and old things have truly passed
away. You are not who you used to be!
It is good also to make sure that you have a well balanced stance and that
you're not leaning heavy on one side. For example, learn to balance well
your ideals and your realities in life. You will save yourself much pain if
you can balance these and the healthy tension created between knowing your
ideals and your realities will produce an ever forward-moving life. Another
good one is to check that you have a good balance between God's Word and His
Spirit in your life. As it was once said so well, "Too much Word and you
will dry up. Too much Spirit and you will blow up. Enough of both and you
will grow up."
-Have a good grip on life-
As with a golf club you need to make sure your grip on life is correct. It
needs to be loose enough that you can have a sense of humor and enjoy the
journey, but firm enough that you have good control and get things done well
and with excellence.
-Keep your eye on the ball-
Here is a classic piece of 101 golf advice: keep your eye on the ball, not
on what's ahead later, or what's going on around you now. Stay focused and
concentrate on what you're doing. What's the ball of the moment for you
champion? What needs your attention right now? You know you have a big old
course left to finish and many more shots left in the game but what ball has
God given you to hit today. Focus your eyes and your swing on that and hit
it well.
Have a great day. Meet you at the golf course again tomorrow.
