=KEEP SHORT ACCOUNTS?== =
Ephesians 4:25-27 (NKJV)
-"Therefore, putting away lying, let each one of you speak truth with his
neighbour, for we are members of one another. Be angry, and do not sin: do
not let the sun go down on your wrath, nor give place to the devil."-
Interesting advice: don't let the sun go down on your wrath. Putting it
another way, "keep short lists or accounts" when it comes to dealing with
people and what they may have done to you. Remember, love covers a whole
multitude of sins and, according to 1 Corinthians 13, keeps no record of
wrongs! The bottom line is that you live in a real world with real people
and every now and then someone is going to do something that has the
potential to hurt and offend you; but it's how you respond to them or what
they have done that determines your future freedom, and defines your level
of maturity in God.
I was playing golf once, in Wales, on a very well-known prestigious course,
and was intrigued by a small sign I saw regarding the replacement of divots
(the pieces of turf lifted by a golfer during play). It gave this advice:
"If the divot (piece of turf) is replaced within five minutes of the damage
being done, by the end of the day it will have begun to restore and mend
itself. Leave it more than five minutes and it can then take 15 weeks to
repair itself!" Life is like a game of golf: there will always be someone
who takes a slice out of you – sometimes on purpose, sometimes by mistake.
As with golf, some people have a good swing and others do not! The ground of
your life always has the potential to get a bit dug up by the bad swings
from others – that's life.
The question is, what will you do about it? Will you forgive them quickly
and start to heal straight away, or put them on a 'holding list' for a while
until you feel like payment for their wrong swing has been fully made? Most
often it is us that suffer when we are not fast to forgive, not the
offender. Champion, learn to get that bit of turf back in place as quick as
you can, keep short lists, make sure all is settled when the sun goes down!
You may not be able to control someone taking a chunk out of your heart
every now and then, but you can determine how long it takes your heart to
heal.
Have a great day,
Andy
