Take a step beyond information
James 1:22-25 (NKJV)
But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man observing his natural face in a mirror; for he observes himself, goes away, and immediately forgets what kind of man he was.
Why is it that there seem to be two types of Christians walking the earth: those who pray and read the Bible and seem to get next to nothing happen, and those who pray and read the Bible (same Bible) and it seems they get everything they pray for? Does God have favourites? If so, how do you become one?
Of course, God does not have favourites. To me the key to this dilemma is found with one simple, yet profound, key word and that word is application.
What James was saying to them, and is saying to us, is that it is not enough to "be a hearer" because all you do when you hear is gain information and knowledge. What we need to do is take another step further and commit to being "doers". These are people who, after reading, "gain understanding", then choose to apply what they have discovered in everyday life. To put it another way, they "put some flesh on it and live it out".
Example
I could be an expert concerning seat belts. I could study and find out everything there is to know about how they are made, how they work, and even draw diagrams of the first ever mechanism used for a seatbelt. Great, I would have "heard well". The bottom line is if I do not put it on when I drive and "apply what I have learned" then, if I crash, I will fly through the windscreen!
Every medicine or medical cream in your medicine cabinet says that it has to be applied before the benefit of the contents become a reality to your condition. In the same way the Word of God works in the life of the believer not when it is only read, but when it is read and then applied!
What eternal truth do you need to take a step beyond information with again today? Let us all purpose to apply God's eternally relevant wisdom and answers to every area of our lives.
Bless you.
Andy
